Last week Andrew and I joined forces and worked on building a fence worthy to contain pigs. It was close to 100 degrees all day long.

Not once did that lil' feller complain about being hot. He opened gates, fetched for tools, and helped me all day long. Thanks to him our little piglets will have a nice home (for a few months).

I finally got the bugs worked out of my Ford 851. I sent the injector pump away to get rebuilt, put a new tire on the front, and had to replace some bearings in the steering box. Rebuilding the steering box was a regular pain. It's runs good now but smokes a bit. I'm not really sure why. It's mostly white smoke. I should probably run some injector cleaner through it, but it does what I need it to do.

In modern society we've been accustomed to all manner of insurance. Dental, medical, life, auto, homeowners, boat, ATV, snowmobile, and probably some other silly insurance that I don't know about. You can't buy a big ticket item without an attempt to be sold some sort of 'factory extended' insurance. That leads me to question the quality of the item purchased at best and just a plain ole fashioned scam at worst.
I'm generally pretty skeptical of insurance. Not that it's intrinsically bad, but I just get the feeling that when push comes to shove, the policy holder will lose. Let's be real, insurance isn't a non-profit industry.
Lately, however I've been a big advocate of insurance, i.e. food insurance. I've been telling some people that it would be a good idea to store up, say, 6 months worth of food. "What for? What's going to happen?" is the typical response. My response is "I don't know, I just think it's a good idea. If you don't need it, you can always eat it."
This is the ultimate insurance. It's really a win-win situation.

I had stayed longer at a friend's house than I planned and I was anxious to get home. It was late at night, and next to nobody was on the road. I needed to get gas and I also needed to go no. 1 like real bad.
I stopped at the first gas station I came to. By that time, I couldn't get gas into the tank fast enough. As I was filling up the truck I was scoping out the store.

I was kinda taken back when npr did an analysis on why men seek prostitutes. (As if an average 14 year old boy couldn't tell you.) I really wondered what gives. And then it hit me. Men are generally hated and looked upon as scum. Eliot Spitzer is scum, therefore all men are scum.

Even though Mr. Spitzer is scum (actually he's the anaerobic scum that grows on the bottom of scum), we must consider one other thing. There are also women who will sell their bodies for pieces of green paper. All this together is a plague not just on men, but women also. The solution in political scandal is not more oversight by man, but regeneration from the Spirit.

I've been asked a lot of questions lately about the general safety of milk; more specifically if rbST is a food safety issue. My short answer is a qualified 'if the consumer doesn't want to drink milk from cows supplemented with rbST, then that's what they should get'.
However, the point at which technology and food meet is a relatively new area of dispute. This issue of bST is only the tip of an iceberg. Soon we'll be right in the thick of it with cloned animals.

Quite literally our entire modern day food supply has been manipulated since the early 1900s, so it only stands to reason that it would lead to recombinant technology and roundup ready dandelions. I personally have no problem consuming milk from cows supplemented with rbST. It's a hormone injected under the skin which is metabolized and used by the cow. (On a side note, I do take issue with it's near blanket use on any bovine with four legs.) Unfortunately, consumers (and other farmers) are quick to capture the high ground by claiming a specific way of farming as unethical. The only thing about farming that is unethical is the farmer.

There's a whole new wave of technology coming, and I'm not saying all if it's beneficial. I'd just like for someone other than Monsanto to be proactive about food production.

I just got a new dairy magazine in the mail yesterday. 95% of these magazines (probably like any other industry pub) is rehash from some older issue except with different vets quoting the same thing.
Anyway, I came across the neatest gadget. It's a rumen bolus that has an imbeded RFID chip and temperature sensor. Cow temp could be monitored with a handheld device or while entering the parlor. As well, health events could be stored on the chip. Really cool stuff. Probably quite expensive too.

I finally found a good chart that details a cow's cash flow. Many farmers percieve this and instincly know that a first calf heifer has only just paid for her upbringing. Notice that breakeven doesn't occur until about 32 months of age(provided that she mirrors the lactation cycles of this chart). In any dairy herd the mature herdmates actually generate a profit, whereas younger animals only provide cash flow.

I'm currently reading about Peter Drucker, and wanted to pass on a few thoughts of his. I mainly was interested in his views on management, but I stumbled on some other ideas too.

-Most of what we call management consists of making it difficult for people to get their jobs done.

-A company's primary responsibility is to serve its customers, to provide the goods or services which the company exists to produce. Profit is not the primary goal, but rather an essential condition for the company's continued existence. Other responsibilities, e.g., to employees and society, exist to support the company's continued ability to carry out its primary purpose.

-If...organizations struggled, he believed it was usually because of outdated ideas, a narrow conception of problems, or internal misunderstandings.

-Thirty years from now the big university campuses will be relics. Universities won't survive. It's as large a change as when we first got the printed book. Do you realize that the cost of higher education has risen as fast as the cost of health care? And for the middle-class family, college education for their children is as much of a necessity as is medical care—without it the kids have no future. Such totally uncontrollable expenditures, without any visible improvement in either the content or the quality of education, means that the system is rapidly becoming untenable. Higher education is in deep crisis.

Most anyone that's familiar with the modern dairy business is aware of the many opinions concerning cow comfort. Articles, research, and books have been written about how to keep a cow stress-free and happy. Most of which is common sense.

What hasn't been given a lot of attention is worker comfort. With all the tangible figures about stall size, feedbunk space, parlor throughput etc, nobody (to my knowledge) has given much thought to what makes a worker stress-free. Now I'm obviously talking about larger farms who employ non-family workers.

Modern free-stall dairy barns have mostly been constructed with exclusively the cow in mind. When building these mammoth barns, the only concern is construction that will generate a return via the cow. Naturally the owner has control over what the barn will look like.

And this brings me to my real point. The real trap of large scale dairy farming is not cull rate or if you use rbST or not, but it's the presumption of some owner that employees are dispensable at best and on the periphery at worst. Most large farm owners are more concerned with farm (meaning their) goals than they are with employee retention. Duh! The employees are the ones you enable to meet those goals. It's one thing to take advantage of an animal; it's quite another to take advantage of your neighbor.

Many well meaning people fall into traps. If you're a small farm and want to expand, ask yourself first 'how will this impact my neighbor?'.

I've lost the article, but I read a while ago how some employees in a CA dairy won a law suit against the farm for not providing breaks. btw, most, if not all of CA dairies are not using rbST. It appears that by next year this time bST will not be used in any herd selling fluid milk. I'm scared of what will fill the void.

I've always thought that rectangular barns were inefficent by any standard. Too much walking, not enough doing. If I were a prophet though, I'd say round barns will have a comeback, especially in smaller dairy operations. Unfortunately modern economics don't allow for small farms to make a return on investment, so they'll have to continue using century old buildings that weren't really suited for dairying anyway. With today's technology you could turn an entire barn into a rotary parlor!

Here's the pic of my cider press that I stole for $75. The guy I bought it off of lives approx 40 miles from here. He said this press was on the farm when his grandparents bought the place. The story is that this farm was given to one of William Penn's close friends in the early 1700s. At the time the whole valley (some 400acres) was all grapes. Apparently this was wine country before the Revolutionary War. So I don't know if this was originally used for pressing apples or grapes.

I'm not sure why I haven't taken the time to post in so long. I've had many good things to write, just never taken the time.
I've been busy with trying to maintain a semblence of balance between work and home, with little avail. Work leads to more work, which leads to more work which leads to 2am emergency phone calls about calvings, equipment failure, etc

Long story short, I've changed jobs. In December I'll be working on another farm. Less hours, same pay, less to manage... All around a good deal. I even get most weekends off (and I mean Saturday and Sunday).

Someday I won't be so naive. All of us make choices in life. Some people just make poor choices in less noticeble, or more acceptable ways.

We are nevertheless thankful for the Lord's provision and goodness.

This is the kind of stuff all farmers in America should be a part of. btw, these farms respectively milk 1200, 2000. 2000, 600, and 800 cows.
Of all the proportially bad media large farms get, most people think them to be nothing more than a (large) den of vipers. As fractured as agriculture is, the last thing we need is misinformation to a public who is ignorant to begin with.

This large farm/small farm dichotomy is a farce. A mere nostalgic figment. For small farms to view large farms as the enemy is ridiculous and couterproductive. Regardless of farm size hormones, bST, mastitis, cull cows, manure spills, debt, and greed are ubiquitous. The economic system in which we live, fostered small farms in the 1940s to get bigger (from 20 cows to 60 cows, which is a 300% expansion). So why is it such a stretch to imagine it would allow large farms to get larger? To find fault with the system in which large farms operate, undermines the the system in which all farms survive.

Just like great grand-daddy bought his first tractor, grandpa bought his first bucket milker, and dad bought his first straw of semen, and so I will buy my first RFID tag for cows. There's a progression here that undeniable. Our ancestors adopted technology, and so should we. Sure, at the time a tractor was just as contraversial as artificial insemination, but we've accepted both as no-brainer tools in the dairy business.

In my mind a most obvious way to determine a pagan culture is to see how closely they relate to the animal world. For instance, if dressing up in dead animal skins, smearing mud paste on your body, and having lice is part of your everyday living, you might be a pagan. Pagans also dress like animals, ie in their birthday suit (mostly).
